A Full Waveform Test of the Southern California Velocity Model by the Reciprocity Method

چکیده
We apply the reciprocity method (EISNER and CLAYTON, 2001a) to compare the full waveform synthetic seismograms with a large number of observed seismograms. The reciprocity method used in the finite-difference modeling allows for the use of high quality data observed from the earthquakes distributed over the wide range of azimuths and depths. We have developed a methodology to facilitate the comparison between data and synthetics using a set of attributes to characterize the seismograms. These attributes are maximum amplitude, time delay and coda decay of the magnitude of the displacement vector. For the Southern California Velocity Model, Version 1 (MAGISTRALE et al., 1996), we have found misfits between data and synthetics for paths traveling outside of the sedimentary basins and the western part of the Los Angeles and San Fernando basins.

Simulating Strong Ground Motion from Complex Sources by Reciprocal Green Functions
We have developed a method to calculate site and path effects for complex heterogeneous media using synthetic Green’s functions. The Green’s functions are calculated numerically by imposing body forces at the site of interest and then storing the reciprocal Green’s functions along arbitrary finite-fault surfaces. By using reciprocal Green’s functions, we can then simulate many source scenarios ...

S U M M A R Y A central problem of seismology is the inversion of regional waveform data for models of earthquake sources. In regions such as Southern California, preliminary 3-D earth structure models are already available, and efficient numerical methods have been developed for 3-D anelastic wave-propagation simulations. We describe an automated procedure that utilizes these capabilities to d...
متن کاملApplying a three - dimensional velocity model , waveform cross correlation , and cluster analysis to locate southern California seismicity from 1981 to 2005
[1] We compute high-precision earthquake locations using southern California pick and waveform data from 1981 to 2005. Our latest results are significantly improved compared to our previous catalog by the following: (1) We locate events with respect to a new crustal P and S velocity model using three-dimensional ray tracing, (2) we examine six more years of waveform data and compute cross-corre...
متن کاملDiscretized Adjoint State Time and Frequency Domain Full Waveform Inversion: A Comparative Study
This study derives the discretized adjoint states full waveform inversion (FWI) in both time and frequency domains based on the Lagrange multiplier method. To achieve this, we applied adjoint state inversion on the discretized wave equation in both time domain and frequency domain. Besides, in this article, we introduce reliability tests to show that the inversion is performing as it should be ...

We obtain precise relative relocations for more than 340,000 southern California earthquakes between 1984 and 2002 by applying the source-specific station-term (SSST) method to existing Pand S-phase picks and a differential location method to about 208,000 events within similar-event clusters identified with waveform cross-correlation. The entire catalog is first relocated by using existing pha...
